Founded in 1937 as aviation expanded across the country, the Canadian Aircraft Insurance Group (CAIG) was established to meet a vital need for specialized risk coverage. Modeled after the proven structure and legacy of the United States Aircraft Insurance Group (USAIG), CAIG opened its doors in Montreal under the leadership of Chairman David C. Beebe – a USAIG co-founder and WWI pilot – and President John H. “Tuddy” Tudhope, Squadron Leader – a decorated WWI flying ace and pioneer in Canadian civil aviation.

Our Legacy of Stability

Our launch coincided with a major turning point for Canadian aviation: the birth of national commercial air transport. Operating complex aircraft over vast, rugged geography carried massive financial risks that local insurers couldn’t manage alone. By sharing these large exposures across multiple stable financial backers, we provided the security operators needed to fly with absolute confidence and scale commercial routes into Canada’s most remote areas.
